Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia 2022

We would like to inform all the professors, assistants, teaching staff, associates and the students that the School of Engineering Management will not be working on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of February on the occasion of the state holiday of the Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia. The first working day is Thursday, February 17, 2022.

Historian Natasa Kostic reminds us of the significance of this holiday:

The Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia, February 15 is marked in memory of two historical events. The first event, when the Serbian Revolution and the First Serbian Uprising began (1804), another (1835), when the First Serbian Constitution, known as the Sretenski, was adopted.

On that day (1804), late in the afternoon in Marićević’s jar near the Orašac, the national elders gathered and decided to invite the people to the uprising and chose Đorđe Petrović as a leader. Then the struggle of the Serbian people for freedom from the Ottoman authorities began.

Twenty-one years later, the First Serbian Constitution (1835) was adopted. At that time, the Serbian peasants decided to destroy the feudal order. Serbia at that time was the country of peasants, but this Serbian peasant accepted the ideas of modern times. Freedom spirit of the Serbian peasant, forced the Serbian prince Miloš Obrenović to open a constitutional question. The great powers at that time, which still influenced Serbia (Russia, Austria, and the Ottoman Empire) did not allow this Constitution to come to life of the Serbs, and Prince Miloš forced them to abolish, within a month of its adoption. Three years after that, the Serbs got a Turkish constitution (hatscherif).
