Materials – the next frontier of decarbonization

Representing approximately 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, materials are a key step on the path to decarbonization. Today, companies are rapidly increasing their climate commitments, and in turn, they are raising the need and ambition for sustainable materials sourcing.

Production capacity for low-emission materials will fall short of future demand for the next 30 years. To meet ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets and stay on track to achieve net new emissions, we must decarbonize the emissions of our materials at an unprecedented scale and speed, requiring collaboration across the entire value chain from production and sourcing to use and deployment.

Sustainable Materials Centers empower organizations to address the sustainable materials challenge and achieve their carbon reduction commitments through the production and sourcing of low-carbon materials.
