Performance “Illusion” by Ivan Viripayev and the Žaba Theater from Zagreb at the Institute for Artistic Dance

Last night, on December 7, the play “Illusions” by Ivan Viripayev and the Žaba Theater from Zagreb was performed on the stage of the Institute for Artistic Dance, in which young performers Ana Pogorelić, Andrej Jemcov and Katarina Ranković performed. Their serious work, mastery of the stage and feeling for partner play showed that the new generation of actors can already present a complex contemporary dramatic text.

Viripayev, often called the “Chekhov of the 21st century”, places the dynamic plot of the love quartet in a kind of timeless capsule. At the center of the play is the problem of communication between the characters, and the play at the Institute further emphasizes it through the cabaret framework of narration and sound. As the action progresses, the boundaries between the narration and the musical background are erased, so the text and music become equal “players” on the stage.

Through the poetically stylized exchange of male-female energy, which is present in each of us, “Illusions” opens the question of where illusion ends and reality begins. The audience gets the freedom to build “their own truth”, while the young actors successfully carry all that layer of meaning and confirm that they can be seriously counted on in future projects.
